Albuquerque Apparition, 1992
Loma Linda Community Center, Albuquerque, New Mexico
A site-responsive sculpture for an urban community center.
This steel and neon sculpture alights atop the parapet of a new community center in the heart of Albuquerque. The center was built on the site of the former “Cactus Drive-In”, a legendary Albuquerque structure that was emblematic of Route 66 and the Art Deco style of the times.
The installation pays homage to this Southwest aesthetic, with forms reminiscent of New Mexico’s Native American heritage and its kitschy Americana. While celebrating this era and its unique expression in the Southwest, “Albuquerque Apparition” crowns the new community center with references of the site’s architectural and cultural history.
